Description: Columbus is a city in and the county seat of Lowndes County, on the eastern border of Mississippi, near the Tombigbee River. In 1810, John Pitchlynn, a U.S. Indian agent, moved to Plymouth Bluff, where he built a home and a farm. After the Battle of New Orleans, a road was built between Nashville and New Orleans and a bridge was constructed over the Tombigbee opening the way for development in the area. Columbus was founded in 1819 and was officially recognized by an Alabama Legislative act as the Town of Columbus. The block where the Gilmer Hotel stood has been the site of a tavern or hotel since 1822. It was originally “Barry’s Tavern” which became the “Eagle Hotel” in the 1830s. By 1860, John Gilmer has begun construction of a large brick four story hotel on the site of the Eagle Hotel which was interrupted by the Civil War. After the War ended, the first three floors were completed and opened as the “Gilmer House Hotel.” It was soon called simply the “Gilmer Hotel” and became a center for social life in Columbus. It underwent a renovation in 1907 and the fourth floor was finally completed. There was hot and cold running water in all rooms as was steam heat, private toilets were installed in 23 of the 65 rooms, telephones were placed in each room and an electric elevator was installed. After 100 years as the Gilmore Hotel, it was run down and razed in 1962 making room for the a “Downtown Motor Inn”. cdispatch It is, however, still on this card that was published by “Curt Teich” and postmarked 1953, just 9 years before it disappeared. The card is in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image of the “Gilmore Hotel” and the reverse is neat and clean. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
