Large, substantial (~25 X 20" canvas), lovely storytelling quality, and historically significant. This antique painting is titled, dated and signed on the back in the hand of the artist. The lovely scene depicted is of a Boston Terrier during the time period in history when Boston Terriers, known as "The American Gentleman" were a relatively new breed having been accepted to the American Kennel Club in 1883. This painting is exceptional for it’s story-telling, historic time period for the breed, and it's fine art quality.The Boston Terrier depicted is a lively mischievous fellow who has been playing with his teddy bear toy. The viewer’s imagination is engaged as we envision the action that has led up to the consequence of a large vase filled with tall flower stems knocked to the ground - the characteristic dog joyfully leaping and shaking their plush toy. This painting is also special for its theme of depicting a large fine porcelain vase and a persian rug - two points of interest often seen in the late 1800’s genre of paintings including those two additional areas of collector interest According to askART, William L. Wells was “An illustrator, cartoonist, and head of the Art Department at the Chicago Tribune from 1897-1915, William L. Wells was also an illustrator for E.W. Howe's book, The Story of a Country Town, (Atchison: Howe & Co., 1883) and Emerson Hough's The Story of the Cowboy, 225 (New York: Appleton, 1897). W. L. Wells made the newspaper strip Old Opie Dilldock's Stories in the Chicago Tribune between 1908 and 1914. In 1915, he created Old Nicodemus Nimble.” William L. Wells was also a painter however his paintings are exceedingly rare and we are only aware of a handful that have come up for auction over decades. This painting is signed on front in the lower right “William L. Wells”, and on the back where the artist wrote the title and year as well as his name. This oil on canvas is large, the canvas image area measuring ~24.5 X 18.5 (the canvas total size is approximately 1.5 inches larger where that edge is stretched over the attachment edge of the wood canvas frame that composes the actual painting canvas on a wood stretcher. We have not removed the canvas on a wood stretcher from the wood frame the painting was found in - the wood frame measures: 27.5 W X 21.5 H and the frame depth is ~2.5”. Respecting that most often collectors choose not to perturb the original patina, original patina sometimes being more highly prized, and the collector preferring to choose their own restoration if they decide to do that - we have NOT had the painting cleaned or restored. Please note that as can be seen in the photos there is crackling as expected for an oil painting over 100 years old, and minor wear as well as surface soiling that can be made to look new again should you choose to have the work cleaned and restored. There are no significant flaws or damage - no actual punctures and no tears, no signs of any previous damage nor restorations or repairs (we can see the back of the canvas as it is exposed). The canvas and paint appear to be ‘healthy, with a bounce as response to a light tap of the back - not frail nor crispy, and the crackling is not unusual for an oil on canvas of its antique age. It can be restored to clean, and all crackling eliminated if you choose to do that. When hung as-is, the crackling is not that apparent in usual lighting, we have photo'd with lighting that emphasizes it so that you can see the crackled but very good and needs cleaning condition.
