Autographed Baseball - St. Louis Cards pitcher/umpire Ken Burkhart- Raymond Burr Description Autographed Baseball inscribed by St. Louis Cardinals pitcher/umpire Ken Burkhart to actor Raymond Burr [Perry Mason]. Circa 1960s. A very unusual and unique association: “To Raymond Burr // The attorney who never lost a case from /Ken Burkhart // National League Umpire who never lost [a ]decision?" PROVENANCE: From the Estate of Raymond Burr; Butterfield & Butterfield auctions, July, 1994 Raymond Burr, of course, is the Canadian-American actor most famous for his roles in the television dramas Perry Mason and Ironside, as well as the first Japanese film production of Godzilla, King of the Monsters [1956]. He won Emmy awards for best actor twice as Perry Mason and placed 44th out of 50 of the Greatest TV Stars of All Time [TV Guide, 1996] Kenneth William Burkhart played with the St. Louis Cardinals (1945–48) and Cincinnati Reds (1948–49) before an ailing throwing arm led to an early retirement. He was a member of the team when it won the World Series in 1946; his room-mate, catcher Joe Garagiola. He then served as a National League umpire from 1957 to 1973. He worked in three World Series and four All-Star Games. Unfortunately, Burkhart is also known as the umpire who made one of the most disputed calls in World Series history during the 1970 World Series between Cincinnati and the Baltimore Orioles. During the sixth inning of Game 1, Baltimore catcher Elrod Hendricks grabbed Ty Cline’s chopped hit in front of home plate as Burkhart moved out to rule it a fair ball. Hendricks apparently had planned to throw Clines out at first base but instead whirled around and tried to tag out Bernie Carbo coming in from third. Caught between the two players, Burkhart was spun to the ground and, with his back to the play, signaled that Carbo was out. Replays showed that Hendricks made the tag with an empty glove -- the ball was in his bare hand -- while Carbo missed the plate. CONDITION: Good; the ball is moderately soiled and stained. The writing, in green ink, is somewhat faded but still clearly legible. [Looks like it might have once read 'one decision' and then corrected to 'a decision'. Unknown whether Burkhart, Burr, or someone else made the correction. Bid with confidence; satisfaction is guaranteed! Domestic shipping is via USPS Priority mail.
