Narrative: Under the direction of Prof. d'Espouy, the graduates of the famous Paris school of art, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, measured, rendered and shaded the views of the famous monuments of ancient Greece and Rome. These drawing were then reproduced by a 19th C. process called heliography. Machine translation of the original French narrative: The Propylaea form a monumental entrance to the Acropolis and are also a military work intended to defend the only side of a hill that is not sheared. It was accessed by a wide staircase: Beulé found remains of it, but they belong to the time of the Roman Empire and it is possible that the reconstruction carried out at that time did not reproduce the primitive layouts. Anyway, we were coming to a portico of six columns which opened onto a vestibule three naves, behind which was a second portico giving on the platform of the Acropolis. This main body, which formed the facade, was flanked on the right and on the left by buildings which were returning; both consisted of a portico of three columns: in front of the right one was the temple of the Wingless Victory; behind the one on the left was the Pinacoteca. The edifice was built with that incomparable perfection which characterizes all the monuments still surviving on the Acropolis. The architect was an Athenian named Mnesicles; the work lasted from 437-432 BC. AD, and we know that they cost a huge sum. Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy!
