Description: Arthur P. Gorman (1839-1906) autographed 1899 typed letter on United States Senate letterhead. He was a Base Ball pioneer, and one of the founding members of the Washington Nationals in 1859. It was the first official team in America. Gorman was the teams star player. In 1867 he led his Nationals on a western barnstorming tour. In that same year, he was elected president of The National Association of Base Ball players. In 1891 a Washington National League franchise was added and were originally called Washington Statesmen and was renamed Senators in honor of Gorman.
