Description: This is for an original issue of April 12 1926 TIME Magazine featuring Lord Irwin on the cover, England’s Viceroy to India. An extremely interesting read on the Viceroy and Gandhi on the practice of Sati, the Hindu ritual where a wife must voluntarily sacrifice herself by setting fire to herself on her husband’s funeral pyre following his death. This practice was done so she could be reincarnated and return as pure. Widows were deemed to be a burden on society so disposing of them was like disposing of garbage. The practice is illegal today but in the first part of the 1900’s it was becoming a division between the people of India. Gandhi actually spoke that women should not marry until 15, and all present widows under 15 should have the opportunity to remarry. Sounds weird today but it was quite a step forward for India. Chang and Wu bombing Peking along with Mexico’s pre-Easter ritual of burning effigies of Judas Iscariot are just two of the other world news stories of the day. Magazine is nice and tight and clean and would be a welcome addition into any high grade TIME magazine collection. A great red for history buffs. Check out the scans and email with any questions.
