Description: the set important! please note: there are a couple of issues with the set: there is one fruit cup that has a hairline fracture that goes through the cup. the boat has a chip to the *inside bottom* of one of the handles. there are a couple of very tiny chips to the outside sides of a couple of fruit cups. there are also some places where the ceramic isn't smooth, but this is under glaze, so finished the manufacturing process that way. see second image for issues. this 1001-arabian-nights-style pattern i believe this is quite rare. this is a 21-piece set [not including the spare lid thrown in]. given the theme, my very best guess is that it was made during the egyptian revival period spurred on by the discovery of the tomb of king tutankhamun in 1922. it is marked «bolero»: come to find that bolero is the shape of the dishes, not the pattern. on the base the dishes are marked with the № «126d» which again, appears to refer to the shape of the service rather than the pattern. it appears that for w s george, shape appears to the point of reference much more than pattern. according to worthpoint.com/dictionary/p/ceramics/na--united-states/wsgeorge-pottery, the patterns with the bolero shape were produced in the 1940s and 50s. i am throwing in an additional lid that doesn't fit any of the 21 pieces of this set. hoping that maybe if you have other dishes of the service, you can use the lid. it is shown in the second-to-last image. the shapes included here are (in the order they are pictured, from image 4 onward and who names i mostly copying from laurelhollowpark.net/orp/wsgeorge.html): 1 12" oval platter 1 9 1/2" oval baker 1 9" round bowl 1 covered/lidded sugar 1 double-handled sauce boat 5 fruit cups 5 bread platters 5 cup saucers [1 bonus lid] since the sum total of the types of shapes here seem to be almost a desert or fruit service, the sauce boat could be for something like raspberry sauce. each dish is marked in green «w s george» and «bolero» and, illegible on most dishes, the pattern № «1 2 6 d». the larges oval platter has an additional № stamped in silver of «b 0749». i could not find any information on this. it could be the pattern №, though i think that is unlikely. or it could be the exact dish shape number for specifically the bolero implementation of the 12" oval platter. each image has one hallmark from a dish of that shape, so see all images. dimensions of each dish (in the order they are pictured, from image 4 onward). all dishes are about 1/8" thick. oval platter 12" in diameter by 9" tall/ dish rim is 1" above the surface on which it rests oval baker 9 1/2" in diameter by 7 1/2" tall. dish rim is 2" above the surface on which it rests. round bowl 9 1/4" in diameter. base rim diameter is 4 1/2". dish rim is 3 1/4" above the surface on which the dish rests. covered/lidded sugar from outside handle to outside opposite handle is 6 3/4". top of handle is 3" above the surface on which the dish rests. top outside mouth diameter is 3 1/2". from the bottom of the base to the top of the lid handle is 4 1/2". bottom rim outside diameter is 3". double-handled sauce boat from spout tip to tip of opposite spout is 6 1/2", as is from outside handle to the outside of the opposite handle. from bottom of base to top of spout tip is 3". mouth diameter is 4 1/2". foot rim diameter is a little short of 4". fruit cups dish mouth is 5 1/4" in diameter. rim is 1 1/4" from the surface on which the dish rests. outside diameter of the base rim is 3". bread platters dish has a diameter of 6 3/4". dishes are very squat: the rim is 1/2" above the surface on which the plate rests. cup saucers they are 6" in diameter. dishes are very squat: the rim is 1/2" above the surface on which the plate rests. the recess for the cup is about 1 3/4" in diameter (inside diameter). [bonus lid] outside diameter of the part of the lid that goes into the corresponding lower dish is 3 1/8". the top diameter of the cover is 4 3/4". about the w s george pottery company [from: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/w._s._george_pottery_company] william shaw george purchased the controlling interest in the east palestine pottery company from the Sebring brothers in 1904, renaming the company the w. s. george pottery company. in 1910 the company opened a manufacturing facility in canonsburg, pennsylvania («plant #2»), and in 1914 another facility was opened in kittanning, pennsylvania («plant #3»). in 1912 fire destroyed most of the east palestine, ohio, facility, named «plant #1». at the time, «plant #1» employed 750 east palestine residents, which accounted for nearly one third of the city's population. the facility was rebuilt in 1924 and was called «plant #4». in 1955 the company went bankrupt, and the east palestine facility was reorganized and came under the control and administration of the royal china company, who renamed the facility «royal china incorporated, east palestine division». the company operated for nearly 56 years, liquidating its holdings between 1959–1960, and closing in 1960. maker's and/or other hallmarks it is marked «bolero»: come to find that bolero is the shape of the dishes, not the pattern. on the base the dishes are marked with the № «126d» which again, appears to refer to the shape of the service rather than the pattern. it appears that for w s george, shape appears to the point of reference much more than pattern. according to worthpoint.com/dictionary/p/ceramics/na--united-states/wsgeorge-pottery, the patterns with the bolero shape were produced in the 1940s and 50s. dimensions dimensions of each dish (in the order they are pictured, from image 4 onward). all dishes are about 1/8" thick. oval platter 12" in diameter by 9" tall/ dish rim is 1" above the surface on which it rests oval baker 9 1/2" in diameter by 7 1/2" tall. dish rim is 2" above the surface on which it rests. round bowl 9 1/4" in diameter. base rim diameter is 4 1/2". dish rim is 3 1/4" above the surface on which the dish rests. covered/lidded sugar from outside handle to outside opposite handle is 6 3/4". top of handle is 3" above the surface on which the dish rests. top outside mouth diameter is 3 1/2". from the bottom of the base to the top of the lid handle is 4 1/2". bottom rim outside diameter is 3". double-handled sauce boat from spout tip to tip of opposite spout is 6 1/2", as is from outside handle to the outside of the opposite handle. from bottom of base to top of spout tip is 3". mouth diameter is 4 1/2". foot rim diameter is a little short of 4". fruit cups dish mouth is 5 1/4" in diameter. rim is 1 1/4" from the surface on which the dish rests. outside diameter of the base rim is 3". bread platters dish has a diameter of 6 3/4". dishes are very squat: the rim is 1/2" above the surface on which the plate rests. cup saucers they are 6" in diameter. dishes are very squat: the rim is 1/2" above the surface on which the plate rests. the recess for the cup is about 1 3/4" in diameter (inside diameter).
