Description: Antique PRIMITIVE Hand Painted Wood Cribbage Board UNUSUAL DESIGN c1800s Looks like solid yellow pine with black paint/ink Size Approx. 24 1/8" long x 5.25" wide, approx. .75" deep A fascinating piece, great for a collector and would look charming out on display. Such a unique piece of gaming history. This comes from the estate of a Primitive Antiques shop owner in Upstate NY. *please check my Store for an old pair of leather dice from this same EstateCompletely handmade. Peg holes are handmade and each are slightly different/uneven. The design is outstanding- a beautiful ARTISTIC/GRAPHIC Primitive design hand painted in black paint/black ink. Top of board has 2 handwritten [in Antique style script] START blocks on each side, one for each player. Opposite end has hand painted arrows. Incredible. The piece is made in the OLD style of 2 rows of 30 pegs with 'pegging out' holes at each end. Newer pieces are paperclip shaped and rounded at one end. Newer pieces also have more rows. Excellent condition, this is an extremely unique collectible handmade cribbage board from the 1800s, possibly earlier. There are no splits or cracks to wood, no damage to paint. Looks like the piece has protective varnish on it, probably from a later era. Someone in the modern era has put felt furniture protector pads on the back of this piece to protect table surfaces, but these can be easily removed. No pegs included.Cribbage was incredibly popular in the 18th and 19th century, particularly in taverns and pubs. Cribbage was for some reason not considered a 'gambling' game because although there were cards involved, there were not dice. This allowed all sorts of mayhem with 'legal gambling' in public houses, as you may imagine. Highly collectible and one of a kind.
