Description: This a lovely platter (10.5 in diameter) hand painted and decorated in the “Imari” style, very popular in Victorian England. It features vivid tones of orange, cobalt blue, red and a gilt border completes the design. This platter was made by British Anchor Pottery Co. Ltd. In Longton, Stoke-on-Trent around the 1900s. The early marks feature the letters BPL intertwined over the anchor. The number 231 above the mark is likely to be a pattern number. “ENGLAND" was added from 1891. The platter is in very good condition. As you can see from the photos the item shows some signs of aging and wear, as well as crazing, more so on the back of the platter. However there are no chips or cracks. There are 2 tiny gold dots on the edge of the plate probably to cover up small imperfections from the manufacturer. The gilding is in excellent condition as well as the painting. This plate would have been owned by a household of moderate means or used below stairs in the servants quarter.
