In 1912, he met Utrillo and Modigliani, and began to paint. He was invited to exhibit at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. His work is never anecdotal - he painted only landscapes, flowers, local figures and portraits, and did so in a Naive style. The art collector Paul Guillaume and art dealer Wilhelm Uhde, a specialist in the work of Naive artists, purchased some of his works. Art has long been regarded as a strong and safe investment. Ellen Kelleher, a personal finance reporter for The Financial Times wrote an article recommending art particularly in the $500 - $50,000 range as a sound long term investment with an impressive current average annual yield of 9.7%.
