Description: An interesting and very rare primitive 19th Century English Oak Candle Box with a beautiful authentic oil depiction of William Holman Hunt’s famous allegorical painting "The Light of the World" (1853–54). William Holman Hunt (1827–1910) was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood movement in England in 1848, and his "Light of the World" came to be one of the archetypal works of the movement. "I am the Light of the World; he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life". St John’s Gospel records Christ's proclamation which inspired Holman Hunt to create this world famous image. In the painting, Christ wearing a crown of thorns is knocking on an overgrown, long unopened door, illustrating Revelation 3:20: “Behold I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me". The original painting hangs in a chapel at Oxford University. The candle box is wooden, probably oak, and nailed together, a copper hinge holds the top.
