Description: Antique African dagger with unique wood sheath, early 20th century. This knife hilt and sheath are carved from a single piece of wood that has been shaped and then cut to make two pieces that match perfectly when seated together. The unique feature of the sheath is that there is a "viewing port" intentionally cut to allow the knife blade to be seen. Perhaps to show that there is a knife available and ready to use? Notice that the belt loop on the back of the sheath is also carved of the same piece of wood. The blade is sharpened on both edges. The tang goes all the way through the hilt and is bent over at the end. There is lovely patina on the blade due to age (see photo). The sheath and hilt have been stained a dark brown. Through use the stain on the hilt has been partially worn away. In good condition considering its age. Total length is 11". Knife blade is 6.5". Knife blade plus hilt is 10". Sheath is 7.5". Width at thickest is 2.75". Thickness including wood belt loop is 1.5".
