After obtaining his MD from Edinburgh University, Lizars served as a surgeon in the Royal Navy off the coasts of Spain and Portugal during the Peninsular War. He later returned to Edinburgh University to teach anatomy and surgery at which time he produced A System of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body based on his dissections of the human body. In 1831 Lizars was elected Chair of Surgery to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. His contributions to medical discourse were significant and his publication A System of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body became a fundamental resource for medical students and doctors. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++And elsewhere on internet: "...John Lizars studied with Edinburgh surgeon John Bell and later taught anatomy and surgery in that city. John's brother William Home Lizars (1788-1859) engraved all of the plates on copper. "The book was costly to produce, for the engravings or etchings were, as usual, time-consuming, and the coloring was done skillfully and painstakingly by hand" (Roberts and Tomlinson, The Fabric of the Body, 504-505). "This superb atlas is certainly one of the most elegant works of the nineteenth century" (Cushing L313)...."
