Description: A Portfolio of Chinese Rubbings 8 Classic Examples - Vintage New The Chinese 'rubbing' is not only an art form in China but is esteemed as an original workof art. Known as "t'a-pen", the 'rubbing' forms a precious record of stone engravings, bas-reliefs, bronzes, jades or paintings, of indispensable aid to the student and scholar. Mounted onthe characteristic Chinese scroll, or assembled in an album, the 'rubbing' forms a memento ofChina`s artistic history. It was part of the ancient Chinese tradition to collect these scrolls, and show them to one`s friendsmuch as Westerners today might collect paintings or have record libraries for the artistic enjoy-ment they offer. One scholar of the T'ang dynasty, Chang Yen-yuan, has left a word-portrait ofwhat this tradition meant: "Since my youth, I have devoted myself night and day to the collecting of rare, antiquescrolls, studying them, enjoying them and devising means for their repair and preser-vation. Every time I obtain a scroll, I work on it with loving care, treasuring andenjoying it for whole days....My wife, my children and my servants often scathingly deride me saying: 'The whole day doing useless things, what is the good of that?'But I answer them with a sigh: 'If one does not do useless things, how can one everenjoy this limited life?' " Presented here are a collection of rubbings from various stages of China`s long history, repro-duced from the original 'rubbings' of famous figures and characters in China`s pictorial history. What`s written above comes from the description sheet that is also included with the prints inside the portfolio cover. Each print measures 16 " x 19 3/4 " and are in excellent Vintage New condition.
