Description: Jimmy Red was popular among farmers and bootleggers who made hooch and moonshine whiskey. Today Jimmy Red corn is a coveted heirloom plant that is grown by farmers, chefs and distilleries throughout the South. If it wasn’t for the quick thinking of South Carolina farmer and seed saver Ted Chewning, the heritage corn wouldn’t exist today. In the early 2000s, when the last known bootlegger growing the corn died, and the corn almost died with him. Two ears were rescued from his plot and gifted to celebrated local farmer and seed saver Ted Chewning, with the suggestion that he grow it out for his hogs. Chewning loves to save seeds — he has revived nearly extinct corns, beans, heirloom radishes, watermelons and field peas. He rescued Jimmy Red as well, growing it and saving kernels each year, increasing the seed stock. Little did he know that soon it would burst on the restaurant scene as a prized heirloom cultivar that makes unforgettable red-flecked grits and a rich, smooth whiskey with honey-nut undertones. This corn has impressed me this year. I grew it using a cover crop for fertilizer , no chemicals! No weed sprays. Even with a drought that wiped out most peoples corn crops around me, and it thrived. This seed is from my selective breeding program. I select first for healthy plants with 2 ears, then for ears that have turned down and has no water damage at the tip of the ear. My son pointed out that the stalk was sticking, sweet and tased like sugar cane. It takes about 200 seeds to maintain genetic diversity. We ship to lower 48 only
