The study found that people who consume carotenoids had a statistically significant 43 percent lower risk for age-related macular degeneration compared to those who consumed the lowest. LUTEIN was the carotenoid most strongly associated with the reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration. Since individual diets may vary on the amount of fruits and leafy, green vegetables, taking a quality multivitamin may be helpful in obtaining the amount of vitamins that reduce the progression of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
