The design depicts a young boy pulling himself up onto a sturdy plank of wood that serves as a perfect seat. The branches and leaves of the maple tree in the background and foreground of the image make one feel as if they were standing there themselves, a breeze ruffling the leaves around them. The engravers at the Royal Canadian Mint used a variety of techniques and finishes to bring depth and texture to the bark and leaves of the tree, as well as bringing an animated, life-like quality to the happy child.
