Description: 1978 Press Photo Model study of Seabrook Lock Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana This is an original press photo. The proposed Seabrook Lock is part of a hurricane flood protection project on Lake Pontchartrain near New Orleans. The area is subjected to storm waves up to five feet high, coming from north to northwest. In addition, seawalls at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport and on the south shore of t he lake reflect wave energy back into the vicinity of the lock site. These conditions could make navigation in the lock entrance difficult and dangerous for waterborne commerce and small boat traffic. Installation of a breakwater lakeward of the lock is proposed to provide wave protection to the lock entrance. However, there is a large hole with depths to -62 feet immediately lakeward of the lock site, the result of dredging operations to obtain material for the New Orleans Lakefront Airport. Due to the hole and poor foundation conditions, the breakwater may be a floating structure, although a fixed structure or a combination of the two are still under consideration.
