Called the Hi Mountain Enduro itutilizes back roads through scenic country-sides of cattle range and fanning lands,then climbs along spectacular ridges onfire trails through sections of the SantaLucia Mountains. Its proximity to HighMountain Lookout gives the run its name.The College Club has been a consistentbacker of legitimate motorcycling eventsin this area, and has been instrumentalin helping create a favorable image ofthose strange characters who like to trytheir riding skills in sporting events. ThePenguins Club is a regular school activitysponsored by the college and subject toregulations imposed upon all collegegroups of this kind. It has a college ad-visor. Lloyd Diedrick, who works closelywith club members and officers.Riders in the Hi Mountain Endurocome from as far as 600 miles, and manyof them, or at least, a few, have partici-pated in ever}' event since the beginning.One such person is Lefty Minayaga, vege-table grower and marketer from Salinas,who is also active in the Salinas RamblersMotorcycle Club and its sponsorship ofevents farther north. Many people nearerSan Luis Obispo, too, have been active inone way or another since the event began.One is Joe Brown, motorcycle dealer inPaso Robles, who has been a supporter ofthis event, and has participated manytimes, and whose son. Joe, Jr., placed sec-ond in the small class with a Yamaha 125this year. Another is Elmore “Pop” Rey-nolds, dealer in San Luis Obispo, whohas attended every event and has helpedsponsor several riders including his son.Bill, and his chief mechanic B. J. Jones.A year ago, the event drew 111 starters:this year there were 213. Sixty-three fin-ished. It is becoming quite a family affair,now, with many families coming in camp-ers or trucks and attending the Saturdayevening’s organization meeting and showpreceding the Sunday event.
