Description: "Greek Orthodox Wedding" Source: The World's Great Religions, published in 1957 Description Title: "While Christ's authorization of Holy Matrimony as a sacrament has been endlessly debated, Catholics and others have traditionally pointed to His presence at the marriage in Cana, where He performed His first miracle, for the required divine sanction. St. Paul added '... even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it... so ought men to love their wives as their own bodies.... This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church' (Ephesians 5:25-32). It is considered a sacrament by Roman Catholics and by the Eastern Orthodox Church, some of the latter's ceremonies being richly elaborate (opposite). Protestants, while not denying Marriage's importance, rank it as a ceremony or rite below the sacramental level. Solemnizing the union of man and woman, Marriage sanctifies human love and the procreation and education of children. The churches have always felt some degree of responsibility for education, secular as well as religious. None is more vigilant than the Roman Catholic which operates an entire educational system of its own. Catholic belief has also led the Vatican to specify that in mixed marriages all children must be brought up within the Catholic faith. The Roman and Orthodox Churches are also the strictest in their rules concerning divorce, the Roman Church forbidding it and permitting permanent separation only for extreme causes like adultery. An annulment declares a marriage invalid from the beginning. For non-Catholics the rules vary widely but are generally less stringent than for Catholics. Whether it is performed as a sacrament or a simple religious ceremony, Marriage is one of the most beautiful of all church occurrences. Particularly lovely is the phraseology of the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer which some other churches have adapted for the ceremony and which describes Matrimony as 'an honorable estate, instituted of God, signifying unto us the mystical union that is betwixt Christ and His Church.' For many the most moving passage is the one from the 1662 Anglican Prayer Book: 'With this ring I thee wed; with my body I thee worship, with all my worldly goods I thee endow,' with which the marriage is formally sealed, the ring symbolizing both union and eternity. GREEK ORTHODOX: The best man holds crowns, symbols of equality and virtue, over bride and bridegroom. Placing them on heads signifies marriage is solemnized. Later priest leads couple three times around altar." Unique and distinctive.
