Description: Urban 'Red' Faber pitched his entire 20-year MLB career with the Chicago White Sox. He went 254-213 and might have reached the 300-win level had the White Sox not been such a horrible team. 1920, the year after the infamous 1919 scandal, Chicago finished 2nd. They would finish out of the first division for the last 13 years of Faber's career, yet he he had a winning record over those seasons. He was one of the few pitchers to win 100+ games in the dead ball era and the period that followed. Hall of Famer teammate and his catcher for many years, Ray Schalk, was quoted as saying that if Faber had been available to pitch in 1919, the scandal may not have happened. A healthy Faber would have gotten at least two starts in the Series, starts that went to Ed Cicotte and Lefty Williams. Faber lost most of 1918 to military service in WW I, and on his return in 1919, he developed arm trouble. He had lost a lot of weight during the war. He also contracted an illness that may have been the Spanish flu. He was still able to go 11-9 that year, but illness put him out of the postseason. The Hall of Famer is represented on this card from the 1923 W572 strip card set, which consisted of 120 black & white or sepia images. Many of the same images were used in the E120 American Caramel set. Cards are known with gray and white card stock reverses. This example has a gray back. SGC has certified it as Authentic because of the uneven hand-cut. The left border is wide and was cut unevenly. The right edge is straight but the border is very thin. There is corner and edge wear that, along with the fact there is no creasing, put it in the solid VG range, but due to the cut, SGC can only grade it as Authentic. The back is clean. Still a decent card of a HOFer who won more than 250 games, a World Series (1917) and was still one of the top pitchers of the 1920s while playing for a bad team.
