Metropolitan Opera House (1912) Programme for the Benefit Concert for the Families of the Victims of the Titanic. 29 April 1912 On Monday, 29 April 1912 Caruso recorded this version of The Lost Chord, that evening he would sing it again, at the Metropolitan Opera House at the benefit concert for the families of the victims of the Titanic, appearing 9th after the interval. Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) had composed the music for this Adelaide Anne Procter (1825-1864) poem in 1877 following the death of his brother. The manuscript is dated 13 January 1877; Fred Sullivan died five days later. The lyric was written as a poem by Adelaide Anne Procter called "A Lost Chord," published in 1858 in The English Woman's Journal. The song was immediately successful and became particularly associated with American contralto Antoinette Sterling, with Sullivan's close friend and mistress, Fanny Ronalds, and with British contralto Clara Butt. Sullivan was proud of the song and later noted: "I have composed much music since then, but have never written a second Lost Chord."[1] Many singers have recorded the song, including Enrico Caruso, who sang it at the Metropolitan Opera House on 29 April 1912 at a benefit concert for families of victims of the Titanic disaster.[2] The piece has endured as one of Sullivan's best-known songs, and the setting is still performed today.[3] Seated one day at the organ,I was weary and ill at ease,And my fingers wandered idlyOver the noisy keys. I know not what I was playing,Or what I was dreaming then; But I struck one chord of music,Like the sound of a great Amen. It flooded the crimson twilight,Like the close of an angel's psalm,And it lay on my fevered spiritWith a touch of infinite calm. It quieted pain and sorrow,Like love overcoming strife; It seemed the harmonious echoFrom our discordant life. It linked all perplexèd meaningsInto one perfect[10] peace,And trembled away into silenceAs if it were loth to cease. I have sought, but I seek it vainly,That one lost chord divine,Which came from the soul of the organ,And entered into mine. It may be that death's bright angelWill speak in that chord again,It may be that only in Heav'nI shall hear that grand Amen. Quick note on grading: The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise."EXCEPTIONALLY QUIET" is close to noiseless, like a vinyl pressing."VERY QUIET" is an above average quiet record for a given pressing."Quiet" is a record that is a great example with some noise. These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment. Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel.
