He was known generally by his pseudonym Thomas Ingoldsby and as the author of The Ingoldsby Legends. The Ingoldsby Legends is a collection of satirical myths, medieval legends, ghost stories and poems written supposedly by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of English clergyman Richard Harris Barham. The legends were first printed during 1837 as a regular series in the magazine Bentley's Miscellany and later in New Monthly Magazine. They proved immensely popular and were compiled into books published by Richard Bentley in 1840, 1842 and 1847. They remained popular during the 19th century, when they ran through many editions. They were illustrated by artists including George Cruikshank, John Leech and John Tenniel; and Arthur Rackham CONDITION: In VERY GOOD or better antiquarian condition. Firm binding and tight pages. Rubbed boards and edges. Corners bumped which has bumped adjacent pages. Several spots of soiling to boards and top text block edge. Almost 100% of the cloth gilding intact (scarce!) No writing or foxing. A few stains and bent/creased pages. Delightful former owner bookplate on front pastedown. Some light toning to page margins and edges.
