Description: McClellan, George. 1849-1913. REGIONAL ANATOMY IN ITS RELATION TO MEDICINE AND SURGERY. ILLUSTRATED FROM PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN BY THE AUTHOR OF HIS OWN DISSECTIONS, EXPRESSLY DESIGNED AND PREPARED FOR THIS WORK, AND COLORED BY HIM AFTER NATURE. IN TWO VOLUMES. Includes 97 beautiful chromolithographed plates. (Plate 80 in vol. 2 is missing) "McClellan was an 1870 Jefferson Medical College graduate who studied anatomy in Vienna under Josef Hyrtl. He founded the Pennsylvania School of Anatomy and Surgery in 1881. Philadelphia surgeon J. Chalmers Da Costa described this. two-volume monograph as "a valuable and beautiful book, the numerous illustrations having been made from photographs of dissections which Dr. McClellan made himself. He also took the photographs and colored the pictures. They show real anatomy; anatomy as it is, not as we might wish it to be. He dissected a body as a great sculptor would carve a statue, for his anatomy was art as well as science." McClellan explained in his preface, "The dissections, in all about three hundred, were invariably the work of my own scalpel, and were all done on subjects selected as best showing the normal relations of the parts." This book set is in good condition for its age with some wear due to use. Both spines, covers, and back boards display wear. Vol. 1 has two loose illustrations, but they are present and in good condition. Vol. 2 seems to be missing plate 80. Binding in both books is stable, but these are large, very heavy books so be gentle with them. All pages are tanned and foxed throughout. Two pages have what I can only describe as blood splatter across the pages (see last photo), so a previous owner must have had this set for actual use at some point! Thanks for looking :)
