Description: Here is an absolutely historic and rare piece of Americana. In 1883, President Chester A. Arthur and a group of influential and historical figures during that time, set out on a three week camping and fishing expedition in the newly declared Yellowstone National Park, Montana Territory. Their expedition was two-fold, one being the need to view personally the majesty that Yellowstone was as well as securing some new rules and regulations that would help keep Yellowstone a park for everyone. This included stopping illegal mining and timbering operations that were ongoing as well as securing pathways for the Northern Pacific Railroad to complete the East to West rail line across America. This trip included the men in the photo (reprint), which was taken at one of their campsites. Sitting left to right-Governor Schuyler Crosby (Montana Territory), Lt. General Philip Sheridan, President Chester A. Arthur, Robert Todd Lincoln (Secretary of War), State Senator George Vest -(Missouri). Standing L-R, Col. Michael Sheridan, General Anson Stager, Captain Philip Clark, Daniel Rollins-(Surrogate of NY), Lt. Col. James F. Gregory. Along with these men, were a 75 Man U.S. 5th Cavalry escort, G Troop with 175 pack animals,18 being mules. At some point in the trip in The Montana Territory, these men along with others stayed at a hotel, where they each signed the guest ledger. This was August 31, 1883. The signees were the following, President Chester A,. Arthur, Robert Todd Lincoln, Lt. Col. Phil Sheridan, George Vest, Daniel Rollins, Capt. Philip Clark, General Anson Stager, Col. Michael Sheridan, Lt. Col. James F. Gregory, and Missouri State Senator George Vest. Below the signatures, a description of the remaining entourage members, such as Army Surgeon Major W.H. Forwood and Major James Moore. Many of these men were in the Civil War, both in the Union and Confederate armies. The photo of the campsite is iconic and to have a signed group of all these men make this a very one-of-a-kind historical piece of American memorabilia. This has never been out in public having spent 140 years in private hands, with a family that had direct lineage from The Civil War back to NY. Please reach out if you have any questions concerning this listing. I have many other Civil war, and political, industrialist autographs on ebay at the moment. Thank you.
