Description: US 1 cent Liberty UX5 postcard sent by Samuel Carroll Derby President of Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio to the B Westermann & Co. requesting a price for part 2 of Volume 1 of Jordans Beschreibung der Stadt Rome. Professor Derby was a native of Dublin, New Hampshire. He received his B.A. from Harvard in 1866 and M.A. from the same institution in 1877. He served as Principal of Schools in Ilion, New York in 1866-1867. He was Assistant at Dixwell's Classical School in Boston 1867-1870. He studied at Harvard 1876-77; Johns Hopkins 1880-1881; Harvard 1892-1893; the American School of Classical Studies in Rome 1903-1904; and the American Academy in Rome, 1913-1914. He was professor of Latin at Antioch College 1870-1881, and President of the College 1877-1881. He was professor of Latin at the Ohio State University 1881-1921. He also served there as Librarian 1881-1892, and Dean of the College of Arts 1896-1898. Derby Hall on the Oval at the latter University was dedicated in his honor.
