Description: Hard to find complete 31-page (oversize) issue of the New York weekly Independent for 10 April 1873. Newspaper format. A very good copy with just a tad of edge wear to the paper wrappers along the spine. Printed on nice rag paper. Text is clean and bright after 150 years. Edited by the able Henry C. Bowen. U.S. Grant was, at this date, in the second term of his presidency. See photo #2 for table of complete contents. I'd send this one along nicely protected in-between stiff cardboard via USPS Priority Mail. Some highlights I find include: A new poem by "Howard Glyndon" (the pen name of deaf poet and journalist Laura C. Redding Searing). It's called Ave Caesar. Joaquin Miller's new poem (front page) In Palestine. Thomas Wentworth Higginson's essay on the travesty (lack of) woman's rights in the marriage contract. It's headed "The Old, Old Story." See front page. The Rev. Theodore L. Cuyler's essay "What the Rope Means," on the execution, usually by hanging, of those who needlessly commit hideous crimes under the influence of alcohol and the necessity of addressing the issue all over the country. "Never touch the first glass, never offer it to others...[has not] the licensed dealer [in alcohol] who sold him the fiery stimulant no partnership in that crime?" This is an item of some interest, also beginning on the front page. U.S. Vice President Henry Wilson's "Rise and Fall of the Slave Power in America." One of a series of essays by Wilson on the the topic. A poem by R.R. Bowker. He would much later move on to fame and fortune with the founding of R.R. Bowker & Company in 1911. Numerous other articles, short stories, reports on religious and other news of the day, book reviews, economic and farming charts and statistics, stock market updates, a "Washington Report," etc. Lots, and all sorts of advertisements.
