HELENA MEDAL Wonderful antique heavy bronze metal complete wtih original ribbon measuring about 3-1/2" long. Featuring a circular, central medallion bearing a silhouette of Napoleon I head facing right, he wears a laurel wreath crown - edge is marked NAPOLEON I EMPEREUR. Reverse is inscribed A SES COMPAGNONS DE GLOIRE SA DERNIERE PENSEE, SAINTE-HELENE 4 MAI 1821 (believe this translates "to his glorious companions his last thought, Saint Helena, 5 May 1821. Border is inscribed CAMPAGNES DE 1792 A 1815 (campaigns of 1782-1815), flanked by a raised laurel wreath - ribbon is correct with tape repair holding the fold-over frayed end flat. The medal was issues in 1857 by Napoleon III to honor with a special distinction the soldiers who fought under the flag of France in the great wars of 1792 to 1815. Medal was designed by Barre and produced by the Imperial Mint. Condition is lovely - lettering and decoration are crisp - ribbon is a bit faded.
