Died at Tilburg 17 March 1849. The Netherlands Deeply Regrets"King Willem II (1792-1849) was the second king of the Netherlands, ruling from 1840 until his death in 1849. He was the son of King Willem I and Princess Wilhelmina of Prussia. Willem II played a significant role in the Belgian Revolution of 1830, where he led the Dutch army in an attempt to suppress the uprising, but without success.His reign was marked by political unrest and increasing pressure for liberalization. Initially a conservative monarch, Willem II dramatically changed his stance during the revolutionary waves of 1848. Instead of maintaining the conservative status quo, he responded to liberal demands and commissioned the revision of the Constitution. This resulted in the establishment of a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system in the Netherlands. The 1848 Constitution, drafted by Johan Rudolph Thorbecke, remains the foundation of modern Dutch democracy.Willem II was also known for his military career, notably during the Battle of Waterloo, where he played an important role alongside the allied forces against Napoleon. In 1847, he initiated the construction of a palace in Tilburg, a city he loved. He passed away in the same city on March 17, 1849, just 22 days before the palace's completion.
