This almost 300-year-old Spanish Pirate Treasure type coin was almost unheard of in any mint state problem free grade until this buried treasure was un-earthed. This buried Spanish treasure contained around some 316 pieces with over half of them grading mint state and none grading below AU 53. The coins didn't suffer environmental or saltwater damage and are certified problem free. This group will be listed as single coin lots and when they are gone their gone. Our group has a solid mix of dates and mints and PCGS we hope will soon open up a Spanish Cob Registry Set we are informed. We believe Spanish Cobs should be graded much like "Ancient Coins" This is to say they should have sub grades for Strike Quality 5/5 and a Sub Grade for Surface Quality 4/5 and so on. Spanish Cob's are "Hammered Coins" in many cases they have been double, and triple struck. The best examples will have 3 dates visible between both sides and are literally almost non-existent. Spanish Cob values are not solely based on the "Sheldon Grade Scale" that's to say AU-58 is worth "X" and a Mint State 61 is worth this much more. A "3 dated" Cob in AU-58 is generally a more valuable coin than a 2-date coin in MS 61, Strike quality matters. After confirming dates and mint marks as well as scaling "weight" and preparing over 300 pieces for grade, you can easily see the differences. We have many certified AU-58 that are better and more attractive Cob's than their sister coins in MS 61.
