The detailed cockpit includes six-piece ejection seats and separate side consoles for easier painting and detailing. The kit also includes two crew figures, external fuel tanks, and a TARPS reconnaissance pod, but no armament. Additionally, the kit provides nozzles for ‘open’ and ‘closed’ positions for each engine, allowing for different power settings or a shut-down pose on the ground. Background:The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American carrier-capable supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, twin-tail, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. The Tomcat was developed for the United States Navy’s Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program after the collapse of the General Dynamics-Grumman F-111B project. It was the first of the American Teen Series fighters, designed based on air combat experience against MiG fighters during the Vietnam War. The F-14 first flew on 21 December 1970 and made its first deployment in 1974 with the U.S. Navy aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65), replacing the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. The F-14 served as the U.S. Navy’s primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor, and tactical aerial reconnaissance platform into the 2000s. In the 1990s, the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) pod system was added, allowing the Tomcat to perform precision ground-attack missions. The U.S. Navy retired the Tomcat on 22 September 2006, and it was replaced by the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Several retired F-14s have been put on display across the US. The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is considered an outstanding fighter aircraft by most standards, but its record of aerial kills in U.S. Navy service was not significant. During its more than 30 years in the fleet, Navy pilots only shot down five enemy aircraft, including four Libyan fighters and an Iraqi helicopter. However, Irani-piloted F-14s reportedly achieved 150 air kills during the Iran-Iraq War from 1980 – 88. Iran claimed their F-14s shot down at least 160 Iraqi aircraft during the war, but historian Tom Cooper only confirms 55 of those.
