Description: #11, 3¢ 1851-57, Relief C, plated as 4L4 with gash on shoulder, and an uncommon mis-struck French entry marking No. 1776. My Research: The stamp originated on a letter in New Orleans, LA on Jan. 4 and traveled to New York City, then to Boston, for the January 14, 1857 sailing of the British Cunard steamship “Niagara”. This letter went from Liverpool (arrived January 26, 1857) to Calais (usually two days to get to France), then Paris, where it was marked (in error) with the entry date stamp seen. The outer ring reads “ETATS. UNIS. PAQ. BRIT. / A. CALAIS X.” The sorting team letters after the ‘A. CALAIS’ were “A” through “D” & “J” through “M”. This appears to be a “A”. As a British steamer arrived in Liverpool on the 26th from Boston, two days will be the normal difference in dates from Liverpool to France, making the date most likely January 28, 1857.
